7 Cool Characteristics of a Police Baton:

A Police baton is a short-handled, collapsible cane with a semi-rigid cylindrical steel shaft. They have long been used as a defensive weapon in police and corrections settings and were commonly found during the early 20th century in criminal areas of cities outside the United States.  The design has varied considerably over time, but modern batons are typically around 60" (cm) in length for officer protection and 45 lbs (20 kg) for offender incapacitation.

The length of 45 pounds is derived from legal standards that allow officers to use as much force as reasonably necessary to control or arrest an offender. Length is limited by the rules of some sports, such as the National Football League, which may limit a coach's challenge flag to be no longer than 45 inches. Many police departments in the United States have replaced traditional wooden nightsticks with telescopic batons of various types.

A visitor to New York City is more likely to see a police officer armed with a telescopic baton or pepper spray than with a nightstick. Telescopic batons are commonly referred to as tonfa by American civilians. In Hong Kong, most police officers are issued two standard-issue batons and one collapsible shaft type.

Characteristics of a Police Baton:

There are many different types of these batons. Some have a wooden core, some are made to break upon impact, and others have a steel core. The characteristics that make up a good police baton include:

1. Durability:

A police baton should be able to withstand the rigors of day-to-day duties. Police officers are constantly swinging their batons at suspects during arrests.  The baton must be able to withstand the impact without fracturing or bending.

2. Baton Style:

There are three basic styles of batons: a) Stick-style, b) Baton-style. c) Multi-stud; some companies will make a range of batons in all three styles (Stick, Baton, and Multi-stud).  For officers who work patrol, the batons should have a sturdy handle and a blunted tip.  Officers who work in tactical units may prefer batons that are slightly curved or stun-gun-like (stun-master).

3. Baton Size:

There is a standard population for police batons, generally, a stick style will be thinner than the baton-style batons; however, for an officer who is involved in arrests/tactical operations, thicker batons are preferred over thin ones.  Another consideration is the use of "smack sticks". The use of a "smack stick" requires a slightly thicker officer's model police baton.

4. Baton Weight:

The weight of the baton is important for numerous reasons: a) Officers who swing their baton during arrests/operations should be able to do so without damaging the baton's integrity; b) A baton less than 2lbs will not have enough weight to break suspects' bones; c) Officers need to be able to swing their batons with ease; d) Officers need enough muscle strength to penetrate suspect's clothing and car doors without shattering or bending the baton.

5. Baton Grips:

Officers need a good grip on their police baton.  A variety of different grips are available, including a) Velcro-like; b) Rubber-coated; c) Leather-like.

6. Baton Length:

The length of the baton should be equal to the height and girth of the officer.  There are no specific guidelines as to what size baton a given officer should carry, but there is a common "rule of thumb" that says an officer's baton should be between 3" - 4".

7. Weight Limits:

Many states place weight limits on officers' batons.  For example, in California, a police baton will weigh between 2 - 4lbs.  States such as Florida, Alabama, and Arizona have weight limits of 3 lbs.  In many states, there is no weight limit.

Advantages of Carrying a Police Baton:

A police baton is a short stick used as a weapon, primarily by police and military personnel. They are often secured on the end of an aluminum- or carbon-fiber staff. Many people find them intimidating, which can deter potential attackers from attacking you while they consider the consequences of attacking.

Many people carry them in the streets to help maintain a sense of personal security. If it were not for batons, we would have very little protection against serious criminals. There are many advantages to carrying a baton:

1) it provides a sense of security if you are in an unsafe environment. Even if the criminal attacks you, they can't quickly grasp your hands with a baton and cause you serious injury or possibly death.  When was the last time you saw someone grabbed and tossed around like a ragdoll?

2) It is an excellent means of self-defense when used correctly, especially if you know how to throw them correctly. If thrown at the right moment, they can be lethal weapons.

3) a baton can be used as a blunt weapon or a short knife.

4) The walking stick can be used to beat someone up without inflicting much damage.

5) A baton is an extremely good weapon to have for self-defense. When properly used, most people will not want to mess with you and will run away.
